Human Resource Specialist

Cynthia, MS | Human Resources Management
College Attended: University of North Carolina Charlotte (undergrad), University of Maryland Global Campus (grad school)

What inspires you?
My grandparents have been my biggest inspiration. To understand where they came from and the opportunities they didn’t have but I was awarded because of the foundation they provided has always been the push I needed to stay focus.

Tell me about your job. What attracted you to this career?
I am currently a Human Resource Specialist. I wanted a job that I would enjoy and allow me to sustain a certain lifestyle. I also wanted a job that would always be needed in the workforce.

What obstacles did you overcome to get to this point in your career?
I experienced some of the good, but also some of the worst things that come with working in Corporate America. I’ve experienced racism and discrimination at work. It is exhausting at times to work the corporate world. It has pros and cons, but being Black in Corporate America you will find your experience is shared throughout our community.

How does a person progress in your field?
I recommend joining HR groups. A lot of it is has to do with your dedication, connections and networking with others. The people you meet in the groups can help you find jobs and be a great referral. There is a certification you can get the provide the background knowledge, and this can be your window in if you have no experience at all. Once you are in, the best way to progress is getting experience in every function of HR, so be a benefits specialist, work in recruiting, try being a generalist. The broader your skill set is the more valuable you are. Companies will reach out to you instead of you always applying to them.

Do you have any advice you would like to give future and current college students?
College is a great experience; you will have many highs and many low but it will teach you a lot about yourself. Even when you feel lost or want to give up, remember that is part of the college experience. It’s okay to change your mind about your major. You might graduate and still be unsure, but you are not alone in the feeling. It may take you longer than some or you might know right away. Either way find what makes you happy and pour all into that. Do what feeds your soul and don’t compare your path to others. Every decision you make will always lead you to being where you were called to be.
